The Queen of England surprised London Fashion Week by showing up at Richard Quinn’s show. According to The Guardian, there was a hush when she entered the room. She sat in the front row between her dressmaker, Angela Kelly, and Vogue’s editor-in-chief Anna Wintour. She sat on a special cushion that was placed on her seat. In spite of this year’s trend of trench coats and giant scarves, the Queen wore an ice-blue skirt suit and carried a black handbag. She wore sensible shoes and black gloves. Quinn’s collection is famous for outfits whose scarves cover models’ faces. But this year, the scarves were of the classic variety, the kind the Queen is known for wearing at Balmoral. However, some of his pieces had more of a retro flare and others were much more creative — like a leather mac with multiple zips worn with a neon-yellow motorcycle helmet and elbow-length PVC gloves. After the show, Her Majesty presented Quinn with the inaugural Queen Elizabeth II award for British design, organized by Kelly and the British Fashion Council. He was chosen as the recipient because besides just his design work, he runs a print studio in Peckham, south London, that is open to other designers and to college students.
