The opening night of the Cannes Film Festival on Tuesday was a bit more subdued than usual, thanks to a new festival-imposed ban on selfies. But that doesn’t mean A-list actors, studio executives and celebrity-watchers didn’t show up to see Asghar Farhadi’s “Everybody Knows,” a thriller starring Oscar-winning couple Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem. The couple was on hand to walk the red carpet, and so did Benicio Del Toro, Julianne Moore, and Isabelle Adjani. Martin Scorsese was also there, and he noted that it was the 50th anniversary of the Cannes premiere of Mean Streets, the crime drama that put in on the map, reports Variety.

The Cannes jury this year includes Oscar-winner Cate Blanchett, Selma filmmaker Ava DuVernay, Arrival director Denis Villeneuve, Spectre actress Léa Seydoux and Kristen Stewart.

Security was vigorously reinforcing the no-selfie ban. In previous years, hordes of guests have stopped at the foot of the steps of the main cinema to try to get a picture, resulting in foot-traffic congestion, slowing entrances into screenings and premieres. Stars, like Del Toro, were still asked for pictures by fans outside the security fences. Security overall is expected to be tighter this year, since France is still under a higher risk level from terrorism, reports Variety.
