Lavish parties, private planes, yachts and declarations of love written in blood. These are a few of the things you might expect, and maybe one thing you wouldn’t, when dating a billionaire. And while one of these thing is not like the other, they are all things writer and former model Jill Dodd recalls from dating Adnan Khashoggi back in the ’80s.

Dodd reflects on the relationship in an episode of the Vice podcast Extremes, recalling the weird and luxurious world of extreme wealth and the lessons she learned from dating into it. After meeting the billionaire at a party in Monte Carlo at age 20 and agreeing to become “one of his wives,” Dodd quickly found herself “a chess piece” in Khashoggi’s world, which was a world of couture gowns, elaborate jewelry, limos and private planes.

In an excerpt from the episode published at Vice, Dodd says that among the biggest takeaways from the experience were the lessons that money “makes you weird” (like, writing “I love you” on someone’s arm in your own blood weird) and impossible to satisfy.

“I began to crave this lifestyle even when I was away from Adnan,” Dodd said. “I got so sucked into it yet was completely unaware of what had happened to me.” Eventually, Dodd found herself becoming more and more like her billionaire beau, in all the weirdest ways. “I was becoming more like Adnan, who was always chasing the next high: the next big toy, the next beautiful woman, the next incomprehensibly lucrative deal, or the next line of cocaine,” she said. “Like him, I became obsessed with trying to fill the gap inside my soul.”

According to Dodd, billions of dollars can’t fill it. But who can blame her for giving it a shot?
