Recently, the CIA introduced a new program called Reel vs. Real to try to better explain what actually happens at the CIA, versus how the agency and its spies are often depicted on TV and in the movies. In late June, they got a visit from the ultimate symbol of spycraft: James Bond. Actor Daniel Craig dropped by the spy agency to dig into the real nuts and bolts of what CIA officers do, which is very different than what Craig does in the franchise action movies.
The CIA invited Craig, as well as other filmmakers behind the Bond movies, because the “CIA does not exist in a vacuum,” according to Maxim. According to the agency, TV and film portrayals of the CIA routinely ranges from the dumb to the supernatural. So the CIA has determined that it is in its best interest to work “where appropriate, with the film industry to combat misrepresentations and assist in balanced and accurate portrayals,” reports Maxim. Craig spent his visit meeting with leadership and the CIA workforce who taught him about the many facets of intelligence collection.
