Moby’s always marched to the beat of his own, uh, beats.
The electronic music pioneer has dabbled in punk rock, opened a vegan shop, briefly produced a Guns ‘n Roses record and has pretty much turned his back on his late ’90s era success.
He’s good at trying new things, and letting things go. And the latter aspect could make one music fan very, very happy, while also helping out a worthwhile cause.
As of today, the Grammy-winning musician is selling his entire personal record collection to benefit Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, a non-profit that wants to change the way doctors treat chronic diseases (emphasizing “prevention over pills”).
This sale takes place at the record marketplace Reverb LP — where Moby also sold some of his synth collection a few months back — and includes a plethora of rare 12” singles, all the ’80s and ’90s house/techno records he used as a DJ (including handwritten markers and notes), test pressings and promo items. Overall, there are nearly 1,000 pieces of vinyl, and as Moby notes, “all the records that I bought and loved and played and carried all around the world.”
Which does include, yes, a 1972 record of German Beer Garden Songs (just $7!).
You can hear the musician’s thoughts on his long-cherished, soon-to-be-sold records over at Consequence of Sound.
