David Letterman briefly emerged from retirement long enough to turn serious about the strategy of joking about President Donald Trump.
“Comedy’s one of the ways that we can protect ourselves,” Letterman told New York Magazine’s David Marchese. “Alec Baldwin deserves a Presidential Medal of Freedom. Sadly, he’s not going to get it from this president.”
Sporting ZZ Top-length beard and relaxed clothing, the 69-year-old explained that he’s been keeping a low profile — but is just as preoccupied with politics as the rest of America.
“I’m afraid if I still had a show, it would be a lot of, “We’re spending quite a lot of money on editing, Dave. If you could just keep it to an hour, we’d all appreciate that, because we have big stars who’ve flown in from Hollywood to be here,” Letterman said. He continued:
“People would have to come and take me off the stage. ‘Dave, that’s enough about Trump. We’ve run out of tape.’ It’s all I’d be talking about. I’d be exhausted,” Letterman said.
