“I’m Hugh Hefner, you may think you know all about me…”
And, no surprise, you don’t.
Somewhat exposing the naked truth: the just-debuted trailer for American Playboy: The Hugh Hefner Story, Amazon’s 10-part docuseries that mixes archival footage from the Playboy founder’s own archive (apparently culled from 17,000 hours of footage and more than 2,600 scrapbooks) with historic recreations featuring Matt Whelan as a young Hefner that are very, very Mad Men-esque.
You’ll see the Playboy Club, the Marilyn Monroe centerfold, the obscenity trials, the activism, the assorted Playboy bunnies. Given the direct involvement of Hefner and his son Cooper (as the series spokesperson), don’t expect too much of a personal deep dive here.
