They only made 112 of them

In 1971, automotive enthusiasts got their first glimpse of the Lamborghini Countach — the LP500, to be more specific. In the years and decades that follows, the Countach became an iconic supercar, blending a design that symbolized speed with a luxurious attention to detail. The Countach has a fascinating history to boot, both in terms of how it came to be and how some of its signature features were implemented.

And now, the Countach is turning 50. And if you thought that Lamborghini might have something planned for that anniversary, you’d be spot-on. At The Quail, Lamborghini announced a new edition of the storied supercar, the Countach LPI 800-4.

Writing at The Verge, Andrew J. Hawkins has more details on this new and very limited edition iteration of the Countach. First things first; unlike past Countaches, this one’s a hybrid. The LPI in its name stands for Longitudinale Posteriore Ibrido — which, Hawkins notes, translates as “Longitudinal Posterior Hybrid.”

As for how it compares to its predecessors, Hawkins writes that “the revived Countach isn’t as sharply angled as its forebear, with a rounder nose and a less severe-looking rear.”

In a statement, Automobili Lamborghini President and CEO Stephan Winkelmann connected the LPI 800-4 to earlier editions of the model. “The Countach LPI 800-4 pays homage to this Lamborghini legacy but it is not retrospective: it imagines how the iconic Countach of the 70s and 80s might have evolved into an elite super sports model of this decade,” he said.

Lamborghini’s only making 112 of these, with delivery scheduled for the first quarter of 2022. That should make 112 supercar enthusiasts very, very happy.
