This Immersive Private Cinema Brings Next-Gen Film Technology Home
What you see when you go to the movies has changed dramatically over the past decade, and it may soon take yet another unexpected turn—this time, in your home.
In a short period of time, cinemas have transitioned from analog to digital projections, and 3-D films have become a popular format. There’s even 4-D experiences now, where various sensations are emulated from the movie—an onscreen explosion rattles your seat or a light sea mist actually sprays you as you’re watching waves crash across the screen. Many tech gurus and filmmakers (including J.J. Abrams) have been calling “immersive cinema” the future of the film-watching experience.
One futuristic way of watching a movie involves using additional screens to the left and right of a viewer in order to create an ultra-wide single screen. The Lumière luxury home theater—built by Van Geest Designs, which specializes in yacht designs; and Genesis Technologies, in high-end media rooms—provides just such an experience. It takes the immersive cinema concept and expands on it. Using an array of panels, the Lumière erases all boundaries of what you’re watching, allowing the action to encompass the entire room around you.
Together, the two companies plan to build these immersive theaters for yacht- and homeowners to any custom specification. Find out more about Lumière by contacting Van Geest Design here.
