Private, filled with expensive equipment and almost certainly stocked with a bottle of whiskey or two, the lighthouse is, in some ways, one of the precursors of the modern man cave.

Located in Michigan and Maryland, the General Services Administration is currently auctioning off six lighthouses that belong to the federal government to the highest bidder. The lighthouses are all in various states of disrepair but, as long as you don’t mind putting in a little elbow greases, there’s some real potential to turn one of ‘em into a pretty amazing piece of property.
The catch is that the sales only convey the physical structure to the buyer and the land and water that lies underneath the lighthouse will remain under government ownership. Because of that detail, an approved sale comes with the caveat that the buyer must acquire and maintain a right of occupancy from the state.
Another potential wrinkle is that buyers must be registered as a non-profit organization in order for the state to grant them a right of occupancy so anyone with dreams of turning one of the lighthouses into an Airbnb should think again. On the other hand, a man cave should be kosher.
Although some of the lighthouses already have approved bids as high as $27,000, you can still get in on this 71-foot-tall looker and its concrete base outside of Cheboygan for just $10,000.
