The Giants started the NFL rumor mill off with a bang on Thursday morning by trading top pass rusher Jason Pierre-Paul to the Buccaneers for a pair of draft picks.
The surprise move has fueled speculation that New York, who will also be sending a fourth-round selection to Tampa Bay in exchange for a third- and fourth-round pick, is planning to select NC State defensive end Bradley Chubb in the upcoming draft.
To get him, the Giants may not have to use their No. 2 overall pick and could instead try to trade down and collect additional assets but still end up with the player they covet.
ProFootBallTalk reports the Colts would “surely” snag Chubb at No. 6, meaning the Giants would likely have to work out a deal with the teams picking 3-5 (the Jets, Broncos and Browns).
Of course, the Giants may not want to make a trade or draft Chubb at all. “The other theorized top picks who would be in play at No. 2 would be running back Saquon Barkley and offensive guard Quenton Nelson,” according to The New York Post.
In Tampa, Pierre-Paul will pair with Gerald McCoy and newly signed Vinny Curry to give the Bucs one of the best pass-rushing fronts in the NFL.
