Last year, a new book from George R. R. Martin set in the world of Westeros reached the shelves of bookstores everywhere. Titled Fire & Blood, it chronicled the history of the Targaryen family — fans of Game of Thrones (or Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire novels) will recall that Daenerys was (apparently) the last surviving member as that series opened, and that the family had a penchant for riding dragons, incest, ruling over Westeros and using the aforementioned dragons to set their enemies on fire.

If you didn’t pick up Fire & Blood before, you might want to do so now. At Deadline, Nellie Andreeva reports that Martin and Colony co-creator Ryan Condal are at work on a series based on this book, set roughly 300 years before the time of Game of Thrones and tracing the decline of the Targaryen dynasty.

News had previously spread that no less than 5 spin-offs from Game of Thrones were in varying degrees of development. Deadline’s report notes that this is distinct from those, and represents a new take on an idea that had been previously proposed:

According to sources, the Condal/Martin project is not a sixth GoT prequel. I hear it represents a brand new take on a world originally tackled by Bryan Cogman in one of the five GoT prequel scripts commissioned by HBO in 2017. Former GoT co-executive producer Cogman confirmed in April that his prequel idea was not going forward.

Andreeva also reports that HBO is “close to giving a pilot order” to the series.

This prequel should not be confused with an entirely separate prequel written by Jane Goldman, set thousands of years before Game of Thrones and starring Naomi Watts. But if you’ve been clamoring for a return to the setting of one of the biggest television series in recent memory, keep an eye out for a raven bearing a message: prequels are coming.
