He’s only 25, but NHL Mark Scheifele star is already thinking about what he wants to be doing at age 40.
Luckily for fans of the Winnipeg Jets, it’s the same thing he’s doing now: playing NHL hockey.
The seven-year pro – who tallied 14 goals in 17 playoff games to carry the Jets to the Western Conference finals last season – is taking his cues from an elite athlete in another sport, NFL quarterback Tom Brady.
“Tom Brady is the best in the world and only seems to be getting better in age,” Scheifele said. “Why wouldn’t I want to learn from him?
Like Brady, Scheifele takes steps away from the field, er, ice, to aid his ability to stick in the league and has done things like hiring a private chef, meeting with Brady’s former chef to discuss food theory and build a meal plan, and using a monitoring app to track his sleep.
“I want to play until I’m 40,” he said. “That’s my goal. There are so many opportunities now to innovate to get a little bit of an edge, and I love exploring that. Doing the right things now will affect me 10 years from now and will give me the longevity to play until I’m old.”
Now entering his sixth season, Scheifele still has a long way to go.
