In what seems like it could be a trick play, the NFL has released a statement in support of a player who is currently suing the league.

In the wake of Nike facing criticism and dropping stock prices after announcing Colin Kaepernick as the face of the apparel maker’s new “Just Do It” campaign, the NFL came to the defense of their corporate sponsor and Kaepernick himself.

Credited to executive vice president of communications and public affairs Jocelyn Moore, the statement doesn’t mention the Nike ad directly, but it clearly was released to with that in mind.

In addition to the statement, the NFL also released a fact sheet detailing the latest updates on their social justice initiative on Tuesday.

Were Kaepernick still in the league, it’s likely his name would have been on it.
