Pinnacles: Climbing, condors and kid-friendly fun

  • 21 May 2015

You’ve probably done Yosemite. Redwood. Sequoia and Kings Canyon. Lassen.

But what do you know about Northern California’s newest inductee to the NPS directory?

The one that’s closest to SF city limits but often overlooked by the outbound masses?

That park is Pinnacles, recently promoted — Premier League-style — from National Monument to full-on National Park and subject of Mission: Pinnacles, a threefold guide to packing up the car for the day and properly acquainting yourself.

Inside: a daytrip for men of all walks and predilections.

Going with buddies? Enlist a climbing instructor and make the jump from indoor walls to outdoor routes.

Kids in tow? They’ll like the short, easy hike to a scenic reservoir, with a couple cave passages along the way.

And for your favorite plus-one? Head for the High Peaks and hope to see a condor.

They’re magic.

And you can pick up s’mores supplies in the general store.

Plus patches. With embroidered condors on them.

If that’s not a solid way to spend a Sunday, we don’t know what is.
