It's Official: We Found the City's Best Pizza

It's from Jersey

  • 01 May 2015

To keep tabs on every San Francisco restaurant and bar opening is folly. But to keep tabs on the most worthy? Yeoman’s work, and we’re proud to do it. Thus we present Table Stakes, a monthly rundown of the five (or so) must-know spots that have swung wide their doors in the past thirty (or so). Bon appétit.

Your correspondent had mixed feelings about leaving the East Coast behind when she first arrived here.

Walking through Manhattan’s Chinatown on a ripe August afternoon: unfortunate.

Walking through Chinatown on a balmy August night: amazing.

For every pro, a con.

Except when it comes to pizza.

Which is why Mitchell and Stephen Rosenthal (they of the SoMa mini-empire that includes La Capra, Town Hall, Salt House and Anchor & Hope) just opened Jersey, a 2nd Street tribute to East Coast-style pies that sits atop this month's edition of Table Stakes.

What to order? The Trenton tomato pie, built on naught but mozzarella, parmesan and red sauce.

The best things in life don’t have to be complicated.

Elsewhere, we have two new offerings from Michelin stars: Melissa Perello of Frances has a new spot in Pac Heights, and husand-and-wife team Sachin Chopra and Shoshana Wolff are bringing a new iteration of San Mateo’s All Spice to the city.

Plus: a tapas place from a Mugaritz-trained chef and the wonderfully over-the-top Dragon Beaux, which has us wondering why every restaurant on the planet can’t offer some version of an all-you-can-eat menu.

Worth checking out, every one of them.

Enjoy the guide.
