Late Night in the Phog is an annual event held to kick off the University of Kansas’s basketball season. This year marked the 35th such event; according to the university’s website, the event included the KU dance team, pep band, skits performed by the men’s and women’s teams and introductions to the players and coaches. Headlining the whole thing? A concert by a big-name musician, one with plenty of hits and a huge draw.
This year, Late Night in the Phog was headlined by Snoop Dogg. It may not have gone entirely as the event’s organizers had hoped.
According to Complex’s report on the concert, the event organizers had hoped for “G-rated standards” for the performance. What they got instead was a Snoop Dogg concert featuring a money gun and pole dancers — prompting the university to offer an apology to attendees after it was over.
This does beg the question of why, if the event organizers wanted a toned-down event, they booked an artist who’s been channeling a larger-than-life persona for, literally, decades.
After the concert, University of Kansas Director of Athletics Jeff Long released a statement apologizing or the event. It concludes with a statement suggesting at least some in the audience were offended.
I take full responsibility for not thoroughly vetting all the details of the performance and offer my personal apology to those who were offended. We strive to create a family atmosphere at Kansas and fell short of that this evening.
As for Snoop Dogg, he recently collaborated with Sheila E. He’s also in the cast of Dolemite Is My Name, which has been getting great reviews. And, apparently, he has a gun that shoots money. Not bad at all.
