From the driving, to the parking, to the not knowing where to drive or park, dinner in L.A. is harder than it should be. That’s why we created Dinner Plan — your itinerary to a damn good time.

This week: We're heading to the Valley to check out L.A.'s first omakase speakeasy.

Get Properly Kitted: Freenote Cloth
Given that it’s always hotter on the other side of the hill and you'll be noshing on sushi, we suggest something Japanese, lightweight and floral. Like this series by Freenote Cloth, which took reams of vintage Japanese fabric — some from old kimonos — to make Hawaiian-style floral shirts (Aster, Natural, Blue). They’re lightweight but built to last, so they'll stay in your warm-weather rotation for years.

Get a Drink: Woodley Proper
Encino
The brass and tile bar is finally open and a veritable breeding ground for a good time, but don’t go overboard — the main event is next. Order something delicious and light, like the gin-centric First Date.

Get Fed: Sushi | Bar
Encino
The same folks that own Woodley Proper (also Scratch Bar) now run an omakase-style sushi bar behind a discreet door in the back of the bar. You’ll need to put your name down for a seating (5pm, 7pm, 9pm) with the hostess standing in the space between Woodley Proper and Scratch Bar. They start taking names at 3pm, and you can grab a drink at Woodley Proper while you wait. Once inside this simple bar, which is sparsely decorated with vintage knickknacks from 1930s Japan, you’ll be served by dedicated chefs and bartenders. Order a negroni and/or sake. Then sit back for 16 modern versions of classic sushi dishes, like yellowtail brushed with sweet corn pudding. After that, head back to Woodley Proper for more cocktails and some belly laughs.
