Until very recently, the question of what the Star Wars franchise would look like on the big screen going forward was something of a mystery. The “Skywalker Saga” concluded; Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss walked away from plans to make a trilogy set in the universe. And it’s been several years since the announcement that Rian Johnson would revisit the Star Wars setting for a new trilogy, though apparently things are progressing on that front.
But now comes news of another familiar face to the Star Wars faithful also making a foray into a galaxy far, far away. That would be writer-director Taika Waititi — who previously appeared in the Disney+ series The Mandalorian and directed an episode of its first season. The Guardian reports that Waititi is set to direct and co-write a new Star Wars film; his collaborator on the screenplay will be 1917’s Krysty Wilson-Cairns.
Especially interesting here is another one of Wilson-Cairns’s credits — she’s also the co-writer, with Edgar Wright, of the forthcoming psychological horror film Last Night in Soho. Along with the news that Russian Doll showrunner Leslye Headland is working on a Star Wars series for Disney+, it suggests some very promising choices all around.
As for what Waititi’s contribution to this cinematic universe might look like, Miles Surrey at The Ringer offered one prediction:
If I were to make a really uneducated guess — I’m a culture blogger, it’s allowed — then let’s imagine the ideal version of Taika Waititi’s Star Wars would be Solo, But Actually Funny.
We’ll know at some point — though the release of this new film remains TBD.
