A “rare” Viking boat was discovered buried in a field after a local farmer sought to install drainage ditches for his crops.
To do so, he needed an archeological evaluation of the land, which introduced archaeologists from the Norwegian Institute for Cultural Heritage Research to the site. Through a high-resolution georadar scan of the area, the scientists discovered a ship buried beneath the ground — one of three to ever be discovered in the country.
“Boat burials are only rarely investigated by archaeologists but this, being a large ship, is nothing short of unique,” lead archaeologist Lars Gustavsen told Atlas Obscura.
The 66-foot-long ship is believed to come from a period dating between the years 500 and 1,000.
