Val Kilmer Will Rejoin Tom Cruise in ‘Top Gun’ Sequel

'Top Gun: Maverick' is cleared for takeoff 33 years after original Navy fighter saga.

The Iceman cometh back.

Val Kilmer will reprise his role as a Navy fighter pilot in the original Top Gun for the upcoming sequel, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The 58-year-old actor had been linked to the project, titled Top Gun: Maverick, since star Tom Cruise got the property back on track for takeoff after the death of original director Tony Scott in 2012.

Kilmer had teased on Facebook in 2015 that he had been offered the chance to play Iceman in 2015, writing “it’s not often you get to say ‘yes’ without reading the script.” Now, three years later, it’s finally official.

Cruise recruited Oblivion director Joseph Kosninski to helm Maverick, which is set to be released by Paramount on July 12, 2019.
