Bono Had a Near-Death Experience While Making U2’s New Album

U2's leader talks mortality and political apocalypse with Rolling Stone.

Bono graces the newest cover of Rolling Stone after sitting down for a mammoth interview with Jann Wenner. Fresh off the release of U2’s new album, Songs of Experience, Bono discusses vaguely a near-death experience that propelled him during the making of the album, though he declines to explain what the health threat actually was. He also weighs in on what he calls the “political apocalypse” in the US and Europe, referring to Trump throughout the interview as “the big primate.” According to Bono, “In the Western world, in our lifetime, there has never been a moment, until very recently, when fairness and equality was not improving,” though he acknowledged there have been periodic setbacks. The interview makes clear that Bono still considers fixing the world entire his own project.
