2017 Was the Worst Year in Movie Ticket Sales Since 1993

Movie ticket prices roses as attendance fell last year.

The National Alliance of Theater Owners announced what everyone was expecting Wednesday, that ticket prices were on the rise as tickets sold were on the decline in 2017, according to The Wrap. The average ticket price in the US this year was $8.93, a 3.7% increase from last year’s $8.65. Based on this data, NATO estimated that 1.23 billion tickets were sold in 2017, the lowest estimate since 1993. In its analysis of the data, NATO highlighted an imbalanced release schedule as a possible culprit, given the now infamously poor summer Hollywood experienced. Movie attendance has been generally declining since 2005.
