Monica Lewinsky was uninvited from Town & Country’s annual philanthropic summit on Wednesday because Bill Clinton would also be in attendance, reports The Huffington Post. Lewinsky, who as an intern famously had an affair with the president during his second term, tweeted about the after-the-fact snub, but did not name the magazine.
dear world:
please don’t invite me to an event (esp one about social change) and –then after i’ve accepted– uninvite me because bill clinton then decided to attend/was invited.
it’s 2018.
emily post would def not approve.

President Clinton attended the summit on Wednesday to introduce Emma Gonzalez, a survivor of the Feb. 14 mass shooting at Stonewall Douglass High School in Parkland, Florida who has become an outspoken advocate for gun control. A spokesperson for Clinton said the former president did not know that Lewinsky was uninvited.
“President Clinton was invited to address the Town & Country Philanthropy Summit,” press secretary Angel Ureña tweeted. “He gladly accepted. Neither he nor his staff knew anything about the invitation or it being rescinded.”

Huffington Post confirmed with attendees that Lewinsky’s invitation to the summit was rescinded. Town & Country issued an apology on Thursday with a tweet.
We apologize to Ms. Lewinsky and regret the way the situation was handled.

After news of the snub first got out, many stood up for Lewinsky on social media, saying that it was the exact wrong thing to do, especially in the #MeToo era, when women are finally being heard when it comes to issues of sexual harassment. Lewinsky has openly discussed the sexist way she was villainized by the press and politicians in the 90s after the news of her affair with Clinton broke.
This is what everyone is fighting against. @townandcountry should be ashamed of themselves. Do they let their heads of the magazine prey on their interns? Would they disinvite them after abusing their power to get what they wanted from them? https://t.co/7y5r878JSM
