Tyler “Ninja” Blevins makes more than $500,000 each month playing Fortnite, the mega-popular battle royale online game. He has scored more than 10 million subscribers on video game live-streaming website Twitch in the process.
But here’s the catch: Belvin says he doesn’t “play with girls” out of concern for his marriage, The Daily Beast reports. Blevins explained that he if played with a woman on his team, fans would spread rumors that he was having an affair with said woman.
“The only way to avoid that is to not play with them at all,” Belvins said, reports The Daily Beast, calling his approach “just kinda like a respect thing.”
This approach has been mostly well-received in the male-dominated world of video game live-streaming, and many fans and other gaming personalities have defended him. But as more money and attention flows into the world of Twitch live-streaming, critics say that Blevin’s decision only reinforces sexist attitudes toward women gamers.
Blevin also ran into another controversy earlier this year after he used a racial slur during a live-stream.
