Simpsons actor Hank Azaria told Stephen Colbert on Tuesday night that he’s willing to step aside for an Indian or South Asian actor to take over the voice of ‘Apu’ on the show after a documentary highlighted how children and young people use the character’s “Thank you, come again” to bully South Asian Americans.
“I think the most important thing is to listen to Indian people and their experience with it. Listening to voices means inclusion in the writer’s room. I really want to see Indian, south Asian writers in the writer’s room, genuinely informing whichever direction this character takes.
“I’m perfectly willing to step aside,” Azaria said. “It just feels like the right thing to do to me.”
