Aaron Traywick, CEO of Ascendance Biomedical who gained notoriety for injecting himself with an untested herpes treatment as well as a potential cure for HIV, died Sunday in a spa room in Washington, D.C., reports ViceAn investigation has been launched into his death, but the Metropolitan Police Department said they have no evidence of foul play. Two people who worked with Traywick at Ascendance Biomedical said Traywick was found in a flotation therapy tank.

“Aaron was a passionate visionary,” software engineer Tristan Roberts told Vice in a statement. “He seemingly never tired as he brought people together to work on some of the most imposing challenges facing humanity. While many in the biohacking scene disagreed with his methods, none of them doubted his intentions.”

Traywick’s death follows weeks of no communication with his Ascendance Biomedical colleagues because of disagreements regarding the company’s future. “We all lost touch with him,” researcher Andreas Stuermer told VICE News last month during a profile on the company.
