The 1970s were a time of change and innovation.

…at least for those for those who remember them.

Among the decade’s greatest accomplishments: the overwater bungalow. The stilted bungalows the Bali Hai Boys built at their resort on the Polynesian isle of Moorea in the ‘70s were popular for years before interest in them gradually waned.

Now an updated version of the mounted grass huts — complete with glass bottom floors, ladders providing ocean access, “Aguas del Amor” outdoor showers and indoor jacuzzis — are coming to an adults-only resort near you.

Opening in September at the El Dorado Maroma in Riviera Maya, Mexico, the first phase of 30 “Palafito” overwater bungalows will be situated off Maroma Beach and cost $1,330 per night to rent.

The bougie bungalows are “the first and only over-the-water offerings in all of Latin America,” says Karisma Hotels & Resorts representative Armando Chomat. In addition to giving guests the chance to take sunrise plunges from the foot of their beds, the resort offers 24-hour room service, customized beach picnics and an on-demand butler.

Until the bungalows open, Gourmet Inclusive Vacation Consultants are the only way to book a spot.
