George and Amal Clooney are working to get thousands of Syrian refugee children into classrooms, CNN is reporting. The Clooney Foundation for Justice, founded by the couple in 2016, is reportedly partnering with UNICEF and Google to allocate $2.25 million toward seven schools in Lebanon, where the public school system operates in shifts; Lebanese students attend class in the morning, while refugee children attend in the afternoon.
Funds from The Clooney Foundation help cover costs of registration fees, teacher salaries for the later shift, as well as textbooks, CNN reports.
“Thousands of young Syrian refugees are at risk — the risk of never being a productive part of society,” the Clooneys said in a press release Monday. “Formal education can help change that. That’s our goal with this initiative. We don’t want to lose an entire generation because they had the bad luck of being born in the wrong place at the wrong time.”
