Sunlight is an essential part of life on earth (save for creatures that dwell in the deepest depths of the ocean and those eyeless cave salamanders).

But it certainly includes humans — especially when it comes sleeping, and more importantly, waking up … something I didn’t realize until I started spending significant time at my girlfriend’s place, which gets loads of morning sunlight. When I slept there, I found it far easier to wake up in the morning, despite going to bed at my usual time. And since I couldn’t very well change the amount of sunlight my basement room gets in the morning, I did the next best thing and got myself a Wake-Up Light Alarm Clock.

If you’re looking to make a similar change, this one from Philips is the cheapest it’s been in a while.

The real beauty of these clocks is that they gradually fill your room with light 30 minutes before they are set to go off, mimicking the natural rising of the sun. I can’t explain how much happier I am waking up to the gentle light and pleasant beeping of this clock than the grating, jarring tones of my iPhone alarm. Plus, it makes a great bedside table lamp, with brightness settings from 1 to 10.

If you’re like me and have a bedroom that doesn’t get adequate sunlight in the mornings, which is probably more of you than you think, one of these clocks will completely change how you wake up and leave you feeling more energized in the mornings. It’s one of the best bang-for-buck purchases I’ve ever made, and since this one is on sale right now, I’d recommend you make it as well.
