Chuck Norris vs. Communism: Who wins?

That’s obviously rhetorical.

  • 11 June 2015

Because you don’t have time to find your horizons (let alone broaden them), we give you Culture Samples: our essential guide to gallery shows and openings that every man should see, and which recurs about once a month. Sally forth.

When Alexander Bell invented the telephone, the joke goes, he had three missed calls from Chuck Norris.

Wanna hear another?

Chuck Norris helped subvert communism in Cold War Romania.

Except that one’s a true story, as told by new documentary Chuck Norris vs. Communism, which you can catch at the LA Film Festival this weekend.

It’s one of six A&E happenings you’ll find in this month’s Culture Samples.

CN vs. C is a festival-circuit darling and an early frontrunner for awards season. The film is focalized through Irina Nistor, a translator-cum-black-market-racketeer who helped illegally broadcast some 500 American movies behind the Iron Curtain from 1985-’99.

And it’s our pick for the must-see film at the annual LAFF, which kicked off yesterday.

Also on our radar this month:

  • Provocative images of contemporary flamenco dancers
  • The dadaist sculptures of Noah Purifoy, revisited
  • A painter’s view of waves while surfing

It’s the perfect cure for June Gloom.

Get in there.
