Dutch actor Rutger Hauer, best known for taking on the role of Roy Batty in 1982’s Blade Runner, has died at the age of 75.
Hauer died peacefully at his home in the Netherlands following a short illness on Friday, his website the Rutger Hauer Starfish Association announced “with infinite sadness” on Wednesday.
Prior to breaking through in the U.S. in the ’82 Ridley Scott epic, Hauer rose to stardom in the late ‘60s in the Netherlands as the star of a medieval TV series Floris and then became known for his role in the 1973 drama Turkish Delight which an Oscar nomination for Best Foreign Film.
Also known for his roles in Sin City, Batman Begins and True Blood, Hauer leaves behind his wife Ineke.
“We at Starfish will always cherish the many unforgettable memories we have of Rutger and his dedication to the Rutger Hauer Starfish Association,” according to Hauer’s association. “One of Rutger’s last wishes was that Starfish should continue its charity activity and its fight against the AIDS disease, and with Ineke’s precious help, involvement and direction we will follow Rutger’s wish and will do our best to carry on Rutger’s inestimable legacy.”
Interestingly, Hauer had a monument erected in his honor in Omsk, Russia.

Produced by sculptor Alexander Kapralo, the monument is based on Hauer’s character in the 1988 drama film The Legend of the Holy Drinker.
