Have you ever walked around the coastline of a country? Admittedly, this is not an easy task, and there few nations out there that even have such a trail system in place. When it comes to England, however, such a trail is in the process of coming together, and should be completed later this year. Several sections of the England Coast Path are already open — and the result is something that makes for stunning vistas and full immersion in the landscape.
The England Coast Path was highlighted by The New York Times in their “52 Places for Travelers to Visit in 2022” feature, and it isn’t hard to see why. The article cites a 44-mile stretch in Northumberland as particularly striking, due to its proximity to the Northumberland Dark Sky Park.
The full breadth of the England Coastal Path doesn’t just include great places to walk. The creation of the pathways have also allowed deeper connections to the local community and to the region’s history. In West Cumbria, for instance, visitors to the path can explore Roman ruins on the Allonby-to-Whitehaven stretch of the trail.
And, for potential visitors concerned about the pandemic, the outdoor nature of the England Coastal Path also works in its favor. It’s an ambitious effort that’s come together impressively.
