The Golden Globes Will Likely Reward These “Popular” Movies

The nominees will be announced on Thursday.

The Oscars may have flirted with the idea of a “popular” movie category, but the Globes is the show that truly rewards films that are audience-pleasers.

There has been a split in recent years, according to CNN, between the artful Oscar-worthy Hollywood films and those that bring people to theaters en masse — and keep all those movie industry folks paid. While the Academy Awards may be seen as the Golden Globes’ pretentious big brother, the more wild night of awards season has made a fun and unpredictable name for itself.

This year, movies like Black Panther may break through the “just a superhero movie” stigma and into the awards categories at the Globes, unlike the critically and audience acclaimed Wonder Woman before it. Others, like the Bradley Cooper-helmed A Star is Born with Lady Gaga and animated flicks like Ralph Breaks the Internet and Incredibles 2, might be able to do the same.

The Globes also has the flexibility of categories, like Musical or Comedy, to nominate and acknowledge films like Marry Poppins Returns and the wildly successful adaptation, Crazy Rich Asians.

Nominations for the 76th annual Golden Globe Awards will be announced Thursday, with the ceremony airing live one month later on Sunday, Jan. 6.
