Yesterday, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) issued a recall of 1.9 million Yeti products because of a magnet ingestion hazard. According to the CPSC, the magnet-lined closures on four different coolers and accessories “can fail and result in detached magnets, posing a risk of serious injury or death if ingested.”
These are the products in question: Hopper M20 backpack cooler, Hopper M30 1.0 and 2.0 soft coolers, and SideKick Dry gear case. The recall is for any of these products purchased between March 2018 and January 2023, so it covers quite a range of merchandise. Yeti issued a voluntary recall and asked customers in a statement to “immediately stop use of these products.” The Austin, Texas-based company also said that it will offer a full refund via gift card, plus an additional $25, for anyone who has a defective cooler.

No, it’s not the EV brand everyone loves to dunk onHow exactly do these magnets cause harm if ingested? “When two or more high-powered magnets are swallowed, the ingested magnets can attract to each other, or to another metal object, and become lodged in the digestive system,” the CPSC said in a statement. “This can result in perforations, twisting and/or blockage of the intestines, infection, blood poisoning and death.”
You would think you’d notice if a magnet fell off your cooler and into a cold beverage or container of, say, delicious chicken salad. But considering the repercussions of swallowing one, it’s better to err on the side of caution. Be careful out there, Yeti users, and turn those coolers and accessories in for shiny new ones ASAP.
