It really is the new Golden Age of Television — we might get a Quentin Tarantino TV series.
In a wide-ranging interview with Deadline, the director — whose new film Once Upon a Time in Hollywood opens today — mentions two new projects he’s written, including a play and five episodes of a TV series entitled Bounty Law, the fictional 1950s series starring Rick Dalton (the character played by Leonardo DiCaprio) in Tarantino’s new film.
Turns out the auteur was inspired by research he did for Hollywood, which follows an aging star of Westerns in the late ’60, also during the time of the Charles Manson murders.
“I really started loving those half hour ’50s Western scripts,” Tarantino told Deadline. “The idea that you could write something like 24 minutes, where there was so much story crammed in those half hour shows, with a real beginning and a middle and an end. Also it was kind of fun because you can’t just keep doubling down and exploring. At some point, you’ve got to wrap it up.”
The show, not starring DiCaprio, would potentially be shot on film black-and-white and the director suggested Netflix, Showtime, HBO or FX as ideal series partners.
Elsewhere, Tarantino discusses how Inglourious Basterds probably would have been a miniseries if Netflix had been a viable option during that filming period, his adoration of both William Shatner and the recent Star Trek reboot, and — on a related note — his idea of making his own possible Star Trek movie like “Pulp Fiction in space.”
