After a short stay at Rikers Island (and a brief hospitalization), convicted rapist Harvey Weinstein will be transferred to Wende Correctional Facility in Alden, New York, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
Wende is a reception/classification center in the New York state prison system, and it’s where Weinstein will be evaluated to determine which long-term correctional facility he’ll wind up at. The former Hollywood producer will spend somewhere between two and eight weeks at the classification center before receiving his long-term prison assignment.
“Depending on his medical and mental health and security needs, it could take longer to find the appropriate place,” Martin Horn, a former commissioner of the New York City Department of Correction, told the Hollywood Reporter. “He’s obviously different from the run-of-the-mill, the average prisoner…. They’ve got a pretty sophisticated way of doing it and they do it pretty well. They get it right most of the time.”
Horn also added that officials will have to determine where Weinstein will be safest, given his notoriety and the nature of his crimes. “Some other prisoner might think, ‘I’m going to make myself famous by assaulting Harvey Weinstein,’” he said. “He may be a target.”
According to a state spokesperson, prisoners who face more than six more years in prison are typically housed in maximum-security facilities. Weinstein was recently sentenced to 23 years.
