Even if you’re the type who might question whether America was ever not great, you have to admit that “Make America Great Again” is a pretty damned catchy slogan. It fits well on red caps and billboards and in the 140-character limit of tweets. It can even be shortened to MAGA and hashtagged just as easily.

Now, read the Democratic Party’s brand-new slogan, just in time for the 2018 midterm congressional elections, as reported by Vox and the Washington Post:

Feel free to blanch now.

For this writer’s money, it’s overlong, redundant (too many better’s), and smacks of something that might appear on a wall in a film version of 1984. You can just see a chain-smoking John Hurt (a.k.a. Winston Smith) coughing out the words, robotically, one at a time, before dissolving into a phlegm-filled fit.

What’s more, what do you even do with it? It’s not hat-friendly; it’s 55 characters long (“Make America Great Again” is 24); and it oddly echoes FDR’s “New Deal,” which was brought about by a crippling Depression.

We feel a crippling depression coming on …

Given that the Democratic Party has little to be thankful for at the moment, maybe what it needs to do is go out into the advertising world and hire the next Don Draper to turn their brand around.

Because right now, it stinks.
