Climate talk isn’t going anywhere.
In fact, it’s now officially part of the conversation.
Collins, which has been in the dictionary game for 200 years, just named “climate strike” its word of 2019. The phrase became popular after the actions and environmental protests of Swedish schoolgirl Greta Thunberg and the Extinction Rebellion group.

Collins defines climate strike as “a form of protest in which people absent themselves from education or work in order to join demonstrations demanding action to counter climate change.”
As the dictionary’s website notes, climate strikes have become a “frequent reality” around the world, and the phrase has seen a one-hundred-fold increase in usage over the past year.
Shortlisted words for 2019 include influencer, deepfake, cancel, nonbinary and another eco-conscious word, rewilding.
