Staff Picks: All the Stuff Our Editors Fell in Love With This Week
Our favorite Black Friday deals, from Eames chairs to jackets
Welcome to InsideHook’s Staff Picks, a compendium of all the stuff our editors have been digging on recently. This week, our editor all choose the one single item that they’ll be splurging on this week in observance of consumerism’s annual feast day, Black Friday.
Hey Handsome Shaving Kit Bag
As someone who just spent a fun but rough week in Portugal — and looked at the puffy, jet-lagged, haggard old man in the mirror every morning and wondered about lifestyle choices — I could use a morning pick-me-up. When unzipped, Boarding Pass’s shave kits offer a colorful “Hey handsome!” welcome to your day. Handsome, water repellent and currently 20% off … along with all the other bags at BP, which is also offering a free luggage tag and a chance at free flights this week.

Penfield Kirby Parka
While Penfield isn’t one of those storied companies that has been around since the dawn of outerwear, they have still been around for quite some time (1975) and know what they’re doing thanks to their New England roots (where it is unapologetically f*cking cold). And today is your lucky day, because it’s not often you’re able to find a top notch parka at just over $200, but that is indeed what you have here thanks to Black Friday markdowns. It’s got a nylon shell for protection from the elements and a faux fur hood so you can stay warm and not worry about the ethical treatment of animals.

Sheepskin Slippers, Orb LED Lanterns and Stainless Steel Douk-Douk
For me, Black Friday is a time to treat myself to a few things collecting dust in my “Buy When on Sale” browser folder. As such, I’m flouting the rules and choosing my three favorites: a pair of indulgent sheepskin slippers from a recent Minnetonka Moccasin and Sleepy Jones collaboration (use code LIGHTSOUT for 20% off), a couple orb household lanterns from Food52 (it’s 20% off with code EXTRAHELPING until Sunday and YAYMONDAY on Monday) and one of these Douk-Douk knives in stainless steel (actually gonna grab a few of these for adult stocking stuffers, too).

Corridor Winterized M65
I came across this jacket at some point in the past few months and immediately fell in love with it. And the creepy AF internet gods were onto me: from that point on, I’ve seen ads for it on what seems like every website I visit. I still haven’t pulled the trigger, but it’s even more tempting now that it’s 20% off through Monday. It is, as its name suggests, a winter-appropriate version of the classic military jacket, with a full lining, a stowable hood and a shearling collar. Swoon.

Eames Lounge Chair
Yes, “that chair,” designed in 1956 by Ray and Charles Eames in an effort to “recreate the warm, receptive look of a well-used first baseman’s mitt.” It’s been often imitated but never duplicated, and while I don’t own one, I have had the pleasure of sitting in one, and it’s every bit as womb-cozy as advertised. So why don’t I own one? Because they tend to cost somewhere on the order of $4,000-$10,000, depending on how rare of a vintage you’re looking for. But once a year, Design Within Reach puts them on sale, and this week is that once a year. We know what you’re thinking: “Only 15% off?!” But “only 15% off” of six grand is nearly a grand in itself, so if you’ve been contemplating the purchase for a while, now is the time to finally bite the bullet.

Levi’s Sherpa Trucker Jacket in Rockridge and Pewter Corduroy
Black Friday shopping is the spiritual equivalent of ordering 10 shots at a bar. It seems like a good idea! Money has suddenly lost all semblance of meaning! Everyone’s egging you on … screw it! Only difference? Here your purchase can give you years of good use instead of a groaning headache. Levi’s is having a bonkers sale right now (40% off with code INDIGO) and in a total “screw it” spirit I’m throwing two Sherpa Truckers in my cart. I can’t decide on either color, and with that discount the total is only $25 more than one jacket usually goes for. I’ll drink to that.
