Dinner Plan: Arts District
Ever taken a date to an underground graffiti party?
From the driving, to the parking, to the not knowing where to drive or park, dinner in L.A. is harder than it should be. That’s why we created Dinner Plan — your itinerary to a damn good time. This week: we head to the Arts District for the ‘Fight Club of graffiti’, deer burgers and the best art bookstore around.
Thursday Evening Plan:
Secret Walls has been dubbed the Fight Club of the art scene. Inspired by graphic artists, Marvel comics and graffiti, this 10-year fixture in the global art community is the world’s premier live art event. Teams of graffiti artists will take over a stretch of white at One Santa Fe and fill it in round-robin style while two judges — with the crowd’s help — stand by and pick a winner. And yes, there will be music and drinks.
October 27, 6pm – 9pm
If you’re in for Secret Walls, you’ll want to make Westbound your homebase. This early 1900s-themed bar is an ode to the railroad history of the location, and their new burger is sandwiched between brioche and decorated in a tangy kohlrabi kraut and smooth basque cheese. The cocktails are stiff and fall themed, like the L’Automne, an eggy rum drink served in a milk jar. But it’s October, so do consider the well-selected beer list.
Saturday Day Plan:
One Santa Fe
Don’t sweat it if you can’t make it down there for the event; Secret Walls’ work will be up for awhile. One Santa Fe also has a solid roster of tenants that include the raffish duds of Wittmore and ice creamery Van Leeuwen. And you’ve gotta visit Hennessey and Ingalls, the art and architecture bookstore that supplies three SoCal art schools and countless coffee tables. If you’re ever at a loss for what to gift someone, you’re bound to find it there.
If you’re going to the Arts District this weekend, also consider a stop at Hauser Wirth & Schimmel. The Swiss-based art dealer just opened a massive emporium of eye-popping works, and their on-site restaurant, Manuela, is slowly rolling out its dinner service tomorrow night. They’ve been serving a Texas-style lunch and brunch for the past month, with mouthwatering dishes like fried quail, deer burgers and fall-off-the-bone ribs. Start here and then go to One Santa Fe, with afternoon drinks to be had at Westbound.
