Yes, competitive cliff diving is a real sport. No, it’s not for the faint of heart.
As Red Bull’s worldwide Cliff Diving World Series has shown us in the past, humans will leap gracefully off of just about anything—and at any height.
But a recent series stop in Bosnia and Herzegovina brought competitive cliff diving to literal historic levels: competitors leaped from the Stari Most bridge, which dates from the 16th century, and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It’s located in Mostar, a former Ottoman “frontier town.” Unfortunately, during the Bosnian War in the 1990s, the town and bridge were shelled heavily and all but destroyed. So what you’re seeing was rebuilt. At the very least, you’ll find some solace in knowing that these divers aren’t at the mercy of 16th-century masons.
