For the first time since 2016, Colin Kaepernick won on a Sunday.
At the 2019 Creative Arts Emmy Awards on Sunday night, the “Dream Crazy” ad which Kaepernick starred in last year for Nike to much fanfare and controversy won an Emmy for outstanding commercial.
“Believe in something, even if it means sacrificing everything,” Kaepernick said in the popular spot, which also features huge sports stars like Serena Williams and LeBron James.
Upon the release of the ad, many people began boycotting Nike because of the brand’s support for a player who endorsed kneeling during the playing of the national anthem. Despite that, the ad was a huge success for the sportswear company and caused its stock shares to jump by quite a large margin.
The ad even caused the NFL to issue a statement. “The National Football League believes in dialogue, understanding and unity,” the league said last year. “We embrace the role and responsibility of everyone involved with this game to promote meaningful, positive change in our communities. The social justice issues that Colin and other professional athletes have raised deserve our attention and action.”
Nike’s ad beat out entries from Apple, Netflix, and Sandy Hook Promise — an organization that battles against gun violence.
