After two days of talks with the Patriots, New England offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels has decided to turn down the head-coaching job offered by the Indianapolis Colts. The Colts released a statement, saying, “After agreeing to contract terms to become the Indianapolis Colts’ new head coach, New England Patriots assistant coach Josh McDaniels this evening informed us that he would not be joining our team. Although we are surprised and disappointed, we will resume our head-coaching search immediately and find the right fit to lead our team and organization on and off the field.”
Over the past 48 hours, Patriots owner Robert Kraft spoke with McDaniels and ultimately sweetened his contract, which helped entice McDaniels to stay in New England. He had not yet signed a contract with the Colts. Throughout the process, McDaniels emphasized to the Colts that he would need time to discuss the decision with his family and think it over. He had been vacillating on the decision throughout the interview process. The more he reflected on the opportunity, the more he felt like it was not the right choice, and that it felt better to remain in New England. However, the Colts were caught off-guard, with one front office member saying, “Unreal. I’m at a loss.” They are now in a coaching bind, playing catch-up at a time when the other head-coaching openings in the league have been filled.
