If 49ers Win, Don’t Expect Richard Sherman at the White House

The 31-year-old has been a vocal critic of the president in the past

With Super Bowl LIV less just over a week away, 49ers cornerback Richard Sherman was asked if he would go to the White House if the San Francisco 49ers are able to knock off the favored Kansas City Chiefs in Miami.

“I haven’t thought about it,” Sherman told The San Francisco Chronicle. “We’ve got a long way between now and then, but I doubt it.”

Sherman’s response isn’t all that surprising considering he’s been a vocal critic of the president in the past.

In 2017 while he was a member of the Seahawks, Sherman called comments Trump made at an Alabama campaign rally about players protesting social injustice by kneeling during the national anthem “very divisive.”

The year before, Sherman was critical of Trump for brushing off profane comments he made on video as “locker-room talk.”

“I think it was a cop-out,” Sherman said at the time. “He needed some way to divert the attention from himself. That’s not how most people talk in the locker room, and I think a lot of athletes would say the same. But it allows him to divert the conversation away from him, which was the focus.”

If he does skip the team’s visit to the White House, the 31-year-old cornerback will be far from the first player not to attend a ceremony at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue while Trump is living there.

The last two Super Bowl winners, the Eagles and Patriots, have not gone to the White House. When the Patriots won three years ago, about half the team stayed home, including Tom Brady.
