Nearly a decade after its discovery in southern Chile, a 15,600-year-old footprint is believed by researchers to be the oldest one ever found in the Americas, Reuters reports.
A student at the Unversidad Austral of Chile found the footprint in 2010. During the past nine years, scientists have worked to determine the fossil’s estimated age and to make certain that the print didn’t belong to some other species of animal.
Paleontologist Karen Moreno, of the Universidad Austral, has overseen the studies of the print. She said that print is evidence of human presence at the site in Orsono, Chile. Moreno added that this was the first proof of humans in the America older than 12,000 years, Reuters reports.
