At the end of the month, tourists flocking to Walton County, Fla., can dive right in to enjoy a brand new museum—literally.
The new, Underwater Museum of Art (UMA) is billed as “North America’s first permanent underwater sculpture garden” and lies 60 feet under the surface, three-quarters of a mile off the coast shore of Grayton Beach State Park.
As National Geographic points out, there are similar setups for scuba divers to enjoy near Cancun and at the Museo Atlantico Lanzarote, but this is a big step closer to home.
Admission is free, with the goal to promote eco-tourism. The sculptures are designed to “quickly attract a wide variety of marine life and, over time, metamorphize into a living reef,” according to the official UMA site.
