At last night’s Tony Awards in New York City, The Band’s Visit, a musical about an Egyptian police orchestra stranded for a night in Israel, swept the awards, winning 10 prizes including best new musical. “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” also won big, taking home the prize for best new play. The play also earned Tonys for costumes, sound, set and lighting, as well as for John Tiffany’s direction. Cursed Child is a sequel to the seven-novel series, and is performed as a two-part drama.
Other winners of the night include Andrew Garfield and Nathan Lane for Angels in America and Glenda Jackson and Laurie Metcalf for Three Tall Women.
The biggest upset of the night is when Once on This Island beat Carousel and My Fair Lady for best musical revival.
Bruce Springsteen got a special Tony Award in recognition of his ecstatically reviewed and totally sold-out show, “Springsteen on Broadway.” In the show, he sings stripped-down versions of some of his best-known songs, but also tells stories from his memoir.
Actor, writer and comedian John Leguizamo also received a special Tony “for his body of work and for his commitment to the theater, bringing diverse stories and audiences to Broadway for three decades,” according to The New York Times.
