A Behind-the-Scenes Look At Underwater Crime Investigation

When asked to describe his job, underwater investigator Mike Berry’s response is simple: “I dive into very strange places to find very strange things.”

For most occupations, that would sound really creepy, but Berry—the subject of a short video by Great Big Story—has spent 35 years helping police recover evidence that ends up underwater. He gets called, by his estimation, at least twice a week to dive into bodies of water for retrieval purposes.

The “three cores,” as Berry puts it, of underwater police investigation are “body recovery, vehicle recovery, and evidence recovery.” He considers these tasks as challenges and honors in equal measure, and takes a lot of pride in solving crimes and providing some sense of closure to grieving families.
