Located in Casco Bay off the coast of Portland, Maine, Hope Island’s main attraction is an 11,295-square-foot three-bedroom home that was built in 2000. Other features on the property include a pair of guesthouses, lighted concrete roadways, stone walls, perennial gardens, eight wildlife ponds, a boathouse, deepwater pier and 11,050 feet of waterfrontage.
The island — which could be converted into a resort if the nearby town of Chebeague Island approves the move — also has numerous barns and equipment leftover from when it was home to a working farm with chicken, geese, swans, ducks, peacocks, deer, horses, dogs and a mule.

Powered by generators and submerged marine cables and equipped with 15 drilled water wells and nine different septic systems, the nearly self-sustainable property is priced at $7.95 million.
“To have an entire island in Casco Bay with easy access to Portland is a rare commodity,” listing agent John Saint-Amour told the Portland Press Herald. “To be frank, the investment in the island far exceeds the asking price.”
If you head up to Portland on a scouting trip, here’s what to do when you’re not on the island.
